Zion Church continues to be a “seeker-sensitive” church where anyone would feel comfortable. It is the mission of Zion Church to help people Meet God, Grow Closer to Him, and Serve Him.
Senior Pastor, Keith Battle
When Keith Battle first began preaching in the late 1980s, those who knew him would often hear him say he would never want to be a Pastor. What an awesome responsibility! This mindset came from a combination of him loving what he did as an Itinerant Preacher and from the difficulty that many Pastors seemed to go through and experience in starting and maintaining a church. Yet, apparently the saying is true, “never say never”.
In the late 1990s, Keith was greatly motivated and influenced by a couple of books that he read that were written by successful church planters — Rediscovering Church by Bill and Lynne Hybels, and The Purpose-Driven Church by Rick Warren. This is when the first seed for the "sensitive-seeker" model of doing church was planted. With the blessing of both his wife and his former Pastor, Reverend Jonathan Weaver (Greater Mt. Nebo AME Church) this is where the call to plant Zion Church became clear to Keith. As he spent days and days in prayer searching his heart, he knew that in his heart was one true passion and that was to start a new and different kind of church – not “church as usual”.
In October 1999, the first meeting regarding this dream was held over a spaghetti dinner. After many meetings and months of preparation, thought and guidance from God, the first public Bible Study was held for Zion Church on Thursday, February 17, 2000. About 25 people attended this gathering at 9301 Peppercorn Place, Largo, MD at the Socrates Technology Center’s Exhibit Hall. Under Pastor Battle’s leadership, Zion Church has grown to over 5,000 regular attendees.
Keith is married to his best friend, Vicki, and they have three children - Asha, Asa, and Kendall.
Pastor Eric Kellum, Lead Campus Pastor
Eric Kellum is honored to serve as the campus pastor of Zion Woodbridge, a Zion Church campus located in Woodbridge, VA.
Eric has served in ministry for over 17 years, with over 16 years in full-time ministry. Eric was ordained as a pastor of Zion Church March of 2012. He was been serving as the Campus Pastor of Zion Woodbridge since September of 2014.
While Eric labors to serve the members and attenders of Zion Woodbridge and the community of Woodbridge, VA at large, Eric's priority in ministry is 1) making sure his wife of 16 years, Susan, remains his "girlfriend" when they are old and gray, AND 2) ensuring that his children do not despise him or ministry, but instead, are fully-committed disciples of Christ.
Eric and Susan are blessed to have 5 beautiful children: Eric II, Taylor, Lauryn, Symone and Zoey.
Pastor Jason Jones, Associate Pastor
Jason (Jay) Jones is a native of Prince George’s County, Maryland. Growing up in a home where the arts and academics were stressed, he gravitated towards music and public speaking at an early age.
Jason has been privileged to serve at Zion Church since its very early days and has served on the Woodbridge Campus since its inception in April of 2012. Jason was licensed as a minster in March of 2012 and ordained as a pastor in October of 2014. 2014 was a big year for Jason because in June of that year, he married the love of his life, the former Christina Brooking and is enjoying his treasure of a wife.
Jason is passionate about Zion’s mission to help people “Meet God, Grow Closer to Him and Serve Him.” He considers himself a “lifelong academic” and enjoys reading, music, basketball, travel and collecting as many fly kicks as Christina will allow. He hopes to continue using his gifts to help people and to demonstrate the love of Christ in the Earth.
